Onondaga County’s Top Karate Competition to be held in Fayetteville, NY

FAYETTEVILLE, NY. – February 12, 2019 – The fighting shout of “Kiai” and the greeting of “Oss” will be heard loud and strong at the Lawrence World Class Karate dojo, which will host the 2019 Syracuse Karate and Martial Arts Championship on February 24, 2019, at 6907 East Genesee Street, Fayetteville, NY, 13066.

The Karate tournament commences at 12:30pm with Karatekas aged 19 years and older in all divisions entering the Kubudo, Kata and Kumite events. At 2:00 pm, nine year olds and younger and 10-12 year olds in all divisions will compete in all events. Then, at 4:00pm, it is time for the 13-15 and 16-18 year olds to compete in all divisions.

Adults and youth Karatekas will be eligible to enter Kubudo (weapon systems), Kata (choreographed set pattern of movements), and Kumite (a controlled competitive fight using basic techniques delivered with “empty hands”) events in four traditional tournament rings that will be set up in the dojo. Trophies for first, second and third place will be awarded and adult holders of the black belt rank will be tournament judges at all events.

Lawrence World Class Karate has hosted more than 30 championships over the years. The tournament is open to Karate students from other schools and over 250 people are expected to attend including competitors and spectators. Karatekas will be judged according to the Olympic rules of Karate.

“We are pleased to host the 2019 Syracuse Karate and Martial Arts Championship at our dojo,” said Rande Lawrence, headteacher at Lawrence World Class Karate. “We have a great afternoon planned that will see competitors challenged and spectators entertained. The championships will see Karatekas of all ages and skill levels come together in the spirit of the art of Karate and sportsmanship to showcase their skills.”

The fee for pre-registered competitors, payable on or before 21st February, is $40 for the day and covers all events.  Registration at the door will cost $45 for participants. Entry is free for spectators.

All Karatekas will be required to wear full Karate uniform with belts and groin protector for males. Gloves and helmets will be provided for free and mouthpieces will be on sale.
